Neolithic Diversities : Perspectives from a conference in Lund, Sweden

Papers from a conference in Lund, Sweden. The title of the conference was "What's new in the Neolithic". The book brings together the latest research on the Neolithic of northern Europe. In the study of the distant human past, certain events and periods have come to represent decisive passages from one human state to another. From a global perspective, the characteristic feature of the last ten t

Measuring techniques in induced polarisation imaging

Multi-electrode geoelectrical imaging has become very popular and is used for many different purposes. For some of these, the inclusion of IP data would be desirable as it would allow the interpreter to distinguish between, e.g. sand formations with saltwater infiltration and clay formations or help delineate landfills. However, present-day IP measuring techniques require the use of nonpolarisable

A search for extraterrestrial chromite in the late Eocene Massignano section, central Italy

The late Eocene may have been a period with an enhanced flux of extraterrestrial matter to Earth related either to a comet or an asteroid shower. The evidence comes from two very large and several medium-sized impact craters, at least two microtektite-microkrystite layers, and a stratigraphic interval with enhanced extraterrestrial He-3, all within the period ca. 36.3-34.3 Ma. Here, we show that t

Att göra region genom stadspolitik - America's Cup och gränslöshetens gränser

This article is based on a study of the sailing event America’s Cup in Malmö in the late summer of 2005. It serves the purpose of exemplifying a project of urban governance. Urban governance means that municipalities are engaged in implementing different strategies in order to strengthen their own position in the competition between cities and regions. The article’s main theme is the relation betw

Cornelis Vreeswijk. Artist - vispoet - lyriker

The six chapters of this study approach the work of Cornelis Vreeswijk from different perspectives with an emphasis on the motifs, poetic technique, and intertextuality of individual songs amd Iyrical texts. Vreeswijks s work is interpreted in the context of contemporary history and debate, the cultural tradition to which it belongs and important events in the author's life. The first chapter foc

The use of routine ultrasound in pregnancy : with special reference to normal and abnormal foetal growth, information and informed choice and the womens' experiences of the prenatal diagnostic aspects

The development of real-time ultrasound in the 1970's made indelible inpact on antenatal care. Assessing foetal growth and detecting deviations from normal in both growth and foetal anatomy became fesible. Expectant parents could also 'see' their foetus. Normal foetal growth parameters at term were consituted and selected parameters from the second trimester were evaluated in the detection of chro

Phosphatidylethanol in blood as a marker of alcohol abuse

Det föreligger alltså en onormal förBiological markers offer a way of assessing ethanol intake and determining whether a health problem is alcohol related. This study investigated the use of phosphatidylethanol (PEth) in blood as a new marker of alcohol abuse. PEth is an abnormal phospholipid, formed only in the presence of ethanol via the transphosphatidylation reaction of phospholipase D (PLD). A new HPLC-evaporative light scatter

Effects of farmland heterogeneity at multiple spatial and temporal scales on house sparrow (Passer domesticus) population ecology

Dessa förändringar har möjliggjort en nödvändig, ökad produktion av spannmål och andra grödor men samtidigt har det haft förödande konsekvenser på dStrong declines of European farmland birds in recent decades are assumed to be caused by decreased food availability resulting from agricultural intensification and concomitant loss of farmland heterogeneity. One of the species suffering particularly strong declines in NW European countries is the house sparrow. In this thesis I investigated the importance of farmland land-use on house sparrow eco

The S3 State of the Oxygen-Evolving Complex in Photosystem II Is Converted to the S2YZ State at Alkaline pH

Here we report an EPR signal that is induced by a pH jump to alkaline pH in the S3 state of the oxygen-evolving complex in photosystem II. The S3 state is first formed with two flashes at pH 6. Thereafter, the pH is changed in the dark prior to freezing of the sample. The EPR signal is 90-100 G wide and centered around g = 2. The signal is reversibly induced with a pK = 8.5 ± 0.3 and is very stabl

Induction of dopaminergic neurons from growth factor expanded neural stem/progenitor cell cultures derived from human first trimester forebrain.

Multipotent stem/progenitor cells derived from human first trimester forebrain can be expanded as free-floating aggregates, so called neurospheres. These cells can differentiate into neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. In vitro differentiation protocols normally yield γ-aminobutyric acid-immunoreactive neurons, whereas only few tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) expressing neurons are found. The pres

Restricted clinical efficacy of cyclosporin A on rat transient middle cerebral artery occlusion

The immunosuppressant cyclosporin A (CsA) has been shown to have neuroprotective action. The inhibition of both calcineurin activation and mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mtPTP) opening are considered the primary neuroprotective mechanisms of CsA. Here we have evaluated the effect of CsA on significantly reducing infarct size induced by transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO)

Cryptotephra sedimentation processes within two lacustrine sequences from west central Sweden

Distal tephra horizons, particularly within lacustrine sequences, are increasingly being used as time-synchronous marker horizons within palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental investigations. As sedimentary features marking the presence of these so-called cryptotephras are absent to the naked eye, it is of some importance that the stratigraphic position representing primary airfall, and likewise t

Fragmentation of proteins in cartilage treated with IL-1. Specific cleavage of type IX collagen by MMP-13 releases the NC4 domain.

Degradation of bovine nasal cartilage induced by interleukin-1 (IL-1) was used to study catabolic events in the tissue over 16 days. Culture medium was fractionated by two-dimensional electrophoresis (isoelectric focusing and SDS-PAGE). Identification of components by peptide mass fingerprinting revealed released fragments representing the NC4 domain of the type IX collagen {alpha}1 chain at days

A high-density putative monomeric mucin is the major [(35)S]labelled macromolecular product of human colorectal mucins in organ culture.

We have studied the biosynthesis of mucins in organ cultures of human colon using isopycnic density-gradient centrifugation following pulse labelling with [35S]sulphate and [3H]-D-glucosamine. A high-density [35S]sulphate labelled component, of larger size than MUC2 monomers, appeared in the tissue and also in the medium. It was not degraded by reduction, trypsin digestion, digestion with chondroi

Hybrid Modelling of Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) Engine Dynamics—A Survey

The Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) principle holds promise to increase efficiency and to reduce emissions from internal combustion engines. As HCCI combustion lacks direct ignition timing control and auto-ignition depends on the operating condition, control of auto-ignition is necessary. Since auto-ignition of a homogeneous mixture is very sensitive to operating conditions, a fast

An analysis of population genetic differentiation and genotype-phenotype association across the hybrid zone of carrion and hooded crows using microsatellites and MC1R.

Abstract The all black carrion crow (Corvus corone corone) and the grey and black hooded crow (Corvus corone cornix) meet in a narrow hybrid zone across Europe. To evaluate the degree of genetic differentiation over the hybrid zone, we genotyped crows from the centre and edges of the zone, and from allopatric populations in northern (Scotland-Denmark-Sweden) and southern Europe (western-central no
