Protein loop compaction and the origin of the effect of arginine and glutamic acid mixtures on solubility, stability and transient oligomerization of proteins

Addition of a 50 mM mixture of l-arginine and l-glutamic acid (RE) is extensively used to improve protein solubility and stability, although the origin of the effect is not well understood. We present Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) results showing that RE induces protein compaction by collapsing flexible loops on the protein core. This is suggested to be a

Förstudie av tillkommande risker för offshore-anläggningar på grund av externa installationer

Demands on cost-efficiency and production-efficiency combined with decreasing storage space availability on oil platforms located on the Norwegian continental shelf force new methods for equipment placing on oil platforms. This report investigates how risk is affected when introducing an external installation on an oil platform. Results indicate that an external installation can reduce the platfor

Food as Function and Food as Figure : Cultural Translation and Cultural Hybridity in A Change of Skies, Love and Vertigo and Nina’s Heavenly Delights

Food is a major concern in popular culture and in literary studies at present and there are numerous novels, movies, and TV-shows that focus on food and its various functions – literary, cultural, and social. Food, which is a highly politicised subject, is one way in which cultural translation takes place as it is used to create an understanding of cultural transfer processes and their implication

Forms and fabrics of the terracotta industry in Southern Etruria in the third and second centuries B.C.

Five moulded terracotta votive heads from Tessennano, Te 1-5, three terracotta sarcophagi from Tuscania, Tu 1-3, two terracotta votive heads from Vulci, Vu 1-2 and three votive heads from Tarquinia, Ta 1-3 are presented in this study. They are included in a larger ongoing research and have been dated to the late third and second centuries B.C. Moulds deriving from the same handmade prototype, henc

Loss of Drosophila Vps16A enhances autophagosome formation through reduced Tor activity

The HOPS tethering complex facilitates autophagosome-lysosome fusion by binding to Syx17 (Syntaxin 17), the autophagosomal SNARE. Here we show that loss of the core HOPS complex subunit Vps16A enhances autophagosome formation and slows down Drosophila development. Mechanistically, Tor kinase is less active in Vps16A mutants likely due to impaired endocytic and biosynthetic transport to the lysosom

“The Whole Island is a Jail and We the Warders” : States of Exception in Tasmanian Historical Fiction

Looking at two historical romances by women writers, Kathleen Graves’ Exile: A Tale of Old Tasmania (1945) and Isabel Dick’s Wild Orchard (1946), this article seeks to examine narratives of an early nineteenth-century Van Diemen’s Land that are apparently at odds with the 1940s Tasmania it was to become. Drawing on Giorgio Agamben’s “state of exception” as the theoretical underpinnings for this es

Constraining terrestrial carbon fluxes through assimilation of SMOS products

The ongoing ESA funded'SMOS + Vegetation' project combines a retrieval component that aims at further improving the SMOS VOD product with an assimilation component that aims at demonstrating the added value of this product in constraining simulated land surface fluxes of carbon dioxide. This contribution focuses on the project's modelling and assimilation component. We describe the construction of

Beyond the legacy of the Enlightenment? Online encyclopaedias as digital heterotopias

This article explores how we can understand contemporary participatory online encyclopaedic expressions, particularly Wikipedia, in their traditional role as continuation of the Enlightenment ideal, as well as in the distinctly different space of the Internet. Firstly we position these encyclopaedias in a historical tradition. Secondly, we assign them a place in contemporary digital networks which

Ncf1 (p47phox) polymorphism determines oxidative burst and the severity of arthritis in rats and mice.

Identifying genes that regulate polygenic diseases influenced by the environment such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), has so far proven to be difficult. By using an alternative approach, i.e., linkage analysis using relevant animal models we succeeded in finding the Ncf1 gene residing in the Pia4 quantitative trait locus to be responsible for the severity of pristane induced arthritis in rats. The i

A glucose dehydrogenase biosensor as an additional signal amplification step in an enzyme-flow immunoassay.

Both the antibody affinity and the detectability of the label are essential in deciding the final characteristics of a heterogeneous immunoassay. This paper describes an approach to obtain a supplementary enhancement of the signal generated by using an enzyme label, e.g., by including the product of the enzymatic reaction in an additional amplification cycle during the detection step performed wit

The contact/kinin and complement systems in vasculitis.

Vasculitides are a group of conditions with marked inflammation in and around vessel walls and vascular leakage. These conditions may involve the presence of auto-antibodies such as ANCA or may be mediated by other autoimmune or pathogenic mechanisms. Regardless of the primary trigger, vasculitides entail activation of the complement system as well as the contact/kinin system. In vivo and in vitro

The new high-pressure hexagonal Laves phase of the YbZn2 compound

The new metastable high-pressure high-temperature synthesized hexagonal Laves phase compound YbZn2 was investigated. The unit cell parameters, low-temperature Sommerfeld coefficient and Debye temperature were determined. X-ray absorption studies and calculations based on dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) showed the intermediate valence behavior of YbZn2 with mean Yb valence about 2.55. The values

Polymorphism in mtDNA control region of Mizo-Mongloid Breast Cancer samples as revealed by PCR-RFLP analysis

Mutations in mitochondrial D-loop region of DNA (mtDNA) may serve as a potential sensor for cellular DNA damage and marker for cancer development. We investigated the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) pattern of the D-loop region in the blood samples of breast cancer patients among Mizoram population. Significant differences were observed among breast cancer and healthy blood samples

Availability Estimations for Utilities in the Process Industry

An important performance measure of a plant is the plant-availability. The higher availability the better, since a high availability implies a possibility for a large production volume and thereby an increased profit for the company. One way of increasing the plant-availability is by eliminating, or minimizing the effect of disturbances. The cause of a disturbance can be personnel, material or equ

Human prostatic acid phosphatase: cDNA cloning, gene mapping and protein sequence homology with lysosomal acid phosphatase

The cDNAs encoding human prostatic acid phosphatase were cloned and characterized. The mRNAs contain 3' noncoding regions of heterogeneous sizes 646, 1887 or 1913 nucleotides. A dimer and a monomer of the conserved Alu-repeats are present in the longer 3' noncoding sequences. The complete sequence of 354 amino acids for the mature enzyme was determined by sequencing both cDNA and protein. Human pr
