Indoor Storage Unit for Recyclable Waste

Problem Statement: The project started with a request from IKEA to contribute more to the environment. The task for this project, issued by IKEA, was to create a concept for a free-standing indoor storage unit for recyclable waste. The unit should hold at least seven different types of waste: cardboard, plastic, paper, metal, glass, deposit waste and some smaller hazardous waste, such as batteries

Analysis of the history of landscape changes over a period of 200 years. How can we predict past landscape pattern scenario and the impact on habitat diversity?

Biodiversity, and in particular plant species diversity decline is linked to landscape fragmentation and habitats loss due to land use transformations but also to decreasing dispersal vectors in the landscape. During the last 200 years the landscape has undergone dramatic changes in its structure and its habitats diversity. Among the different habitats that constitute rural landscape there are thr

Real-world diagnostic accuracy and use of immunohistochemical markers in lung cancer diagnostics

Objectives: Accurate and reliable diagnostics are crucial as histopathological type influ-ences selection of treatment in lung cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate real-world accuracy and use of immunohistochemical (IHC) staining in lung cancer diagnostics. Materials and Methods: The diagnosis and used IHC stains for small specimens with lung cancer on follow-up resection were retrospecti

Engineering of Human Fetal Hemoglobin

In blood, the oxygen-transporting protein hemoglobin (Hb) governs the oxygenation of cells and tissues. Naturally, this protein has claimed a place in the center of the research field of artificial oxygen therapeutics. Such Hb-based products have used cell-free Hb purified from human, bovine, invertebrate, or recombinant sources to create hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs). However, administ

Person centred care and shared decision making: implications for ethics, public health and research

This paper presents a systematic account of ethical issues actualised in different areas, as well as at different levels and stages of health care, by introducing organisational and other procedures that embody a shift towards person centred care and shared decision-making (PCC/SDM). The analysis builds on general ethical theory and earlier work on aspects of PCC/SDM relevant from an ethics perspe

A Distinctive Adnexal (Usually Paratubal) Neoplasm Often Associated with Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome and Characterized by STK11 Alterations (STK11 Adnexal Tumor) : A Report of 22 Cases

We describe 22 examples of a novel, usually paratubal, adnexal tumor associated with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in nearly 50% of cases that harbored STK11 alterations in all tested (n=21). The patients ranged from 17 to 66 years (median=39 y) and the tumors from 4.5 to 25.5 cm (median=11 cm). Most (n=18) were paratubal, with metastases noted in 11/22 (50%) and recurrences in 12/15 (80%). Morphological

An overview of the Amazonian Aerosol Characterization Experiment 2008 (AMAZE-08)

The Amazon Basin provides an excellent environment for studying the sources, transformations, and properties of natural aerosol particles and the resulting links between biological processes and climate. With this framework in mind, the Amazonian Aerosol Characterization Experiment (AMAZE-08), carried out from 7 February to 14 March 2008 during the wet season in the central Amazon Basin, sought to

Laser beam measurement of abdominal sagittal diameter in obese children: a validation study.

What is already known about this subject Sagittal diameter (SAD), i.e. the mid height of the abdomen when lying down, has been reported to correlate to visceral fat, insulin resistance and cardiovascular risk factors in adults. SAD seems to be the best anthropometric predictor of cardiovascular risk, and also of more importance than waist circumference (WC) in adults. There has been no validation

Grapes in the Desert : Metaphors, Models, and Themes in Hosea 4-14

This study explores the textual world of Hosea 4-14. To this end it uses a melhod informed by modern metaphor theory. At the outset, the hypothesis that chapters 4-14 in the book of Hosea constitute a coherent literary composition is submitted. The perspectival theory advanced by Eva F. Kittay is selected as a theoretical basis for the analysis. This theory is iupplemented by mslghts derived from

Modelling Life Cycle Cost for Indoor Climate Systems

MoThe indoor climate system, which serves a building with a proper indoor air quality and thermal comfort, has been predominantly designed based on the initial cost. A life cycle approach could improve both the economic and environmental performance since the energy use could decrease. There has been a lack of knowledge, models and tools for determining the life cycle cost (LCC) for an indoor climat

Specificity of Fc receptors induced by herpes simplex virus type 1: comparison of immunoglobulin G from different animal species

Cells infected with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) express a cell surface receptor able to bind the Fc portion of immunoglobulin G (IgG). Of the four human IgG subclasses, the HSV-1 Fc receptor, like staphylococcal protein A, binds to all except IgG3. In this paper, we describe the binding of a number of animal IgG and IgG subclass molecules to HSV-1-infected cells and compare this binding to

Can a 'single hit' cause limitations in language development? A comparative study of Swedish children with hearing impairment and children with specific language impairment.

Studies of language in children with mild-to-moderate hearing impairment ( HI) indicate that they often have problems in phonological shortterm memory (PSTM) and that they have linguistic weaknesses both in vocabulary and morphosyntax similar to children with specific language impairment (SLI). However, children with HI may be more likely than children with SLI to acquire typical language skills a

Second primary cancers in melanoma patients critically shorten survival

Background: Survival in malignant cutaneous melanoma has improved but increasing survival will result in an increased likelihood of the occurrence of second primary cancers (SPCs). SPCs may adversely interfere with survival. We quantified survival in patients with different types of SPCs, in comparison to known poor prognostic indicators of metastatic disease. Methods: Data for melanoma and any SP

Exploring publication productivity in the Philippines: A 10-year gendered analysis of six academic disciplines

This article presents a gendered analysis exploring publication productivity in the Philippines using bibliometric data from the Web of Science. It investigates the temporal pattern of journal article publications for six disciplines, its gendered distribution, differences between disciplines, patterns of authorship and collaboration, and how much women authors contribute and participate in resear

PIXE in 1980: Summary of the Second International Conference on Particle Induced X-Ray Emission and its Analytical Applications

The Second International Conference on Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) and its analytical applications was held in Lund, Sweden, June 9-12, 1980. About a hundred papers were presented, including seven invited talks (PIXE and particle scattering, microbeam analysis (2), applications to aerosols (2) and biological samples (2)). The main impression left by the conference was that both the PIXE

Woody elements benefit bird diversity to a larger extent than semi-natural grasslands in cereal-dominated landscapes

Increasing landscape complexity can mitigate negative effects of agricultural intensification on biodiversity by offering resources complementary to those provided in arable fields. In particular, grazed semi-natural grasslands and woody elements support farmland birds, but little is known about their relative effects on bird diversity and community composition. In addition, the relative importanc

In vivo comparison of MRI-based and MRS-based quantification of adipose tissue fatty acid composition against gas chromatography

Purpose: To compare MR-based fatty acid composition (FAC) quantification methods against the gold standard technique, gas chromatography (GC), with comparison of a free and a constrained signal model. The FAC was measured in the healthy and edematous legs of lymphedema patients. Methods: In vivo MRS and MRI data were acquired from 19 patients at 3 T. Biopsies were collected from subcutaneous adipo
